The Castle of Saint Nikolas was the most magnificent residence of Santorini.The Castle of Saint Nikolas was inhabited by Dargenta Family who were descents of Romanos Argyros, a byzantine Emperor. However, Turkish ships captivated the castle in 1577 and the Dargentas were transferred to Syria enslaved.The fortified settlement spread towards Ammoudi as time passed and safety reasons led people to extend the wall to the windmills (used for grinding split peas and barley) in order to protect them.The Castle of Oia is the most famous place for the sunset sightseeing! It is said that the best sunset view of Santorini can be seen from the Castle. Most of the visitors gather to the Castle area before the sunset preparing their cameras or embracing their beloved persons and gaze to the west waiting for the sun to start curving towards the sea.
